Can a Smartwatch Help You Save on Gas? My UX Challenge Solution That Won Runner-Up
How I designed an intuitive smartwatch app to help drivers find cheap gas—fast, easy, and hands-free
This design was part of a challenge, and my solution was a runner-up!
Context
This design challenge was organized by the Crowwwn platform, where I was honored to be the runner-up. The problem statement was straightforward yet impactful:
"When I am running low on gas, I want to be able to find the most affordable gas stations near me, so I save money every time I fill up."
My Approach
Given the current rise in gas prices, I wanted to design a solution that is not only efficient but also convenient for drivers. Here’s how I tackled the challenge:
I first outlined all the key requirements to ensure the solution effectively addressed the challenge.
Instead of a traditional mobile app, I opted for a smartwatch app since watches provide hands-free convenience while driving.
I followed Apple’s design guidelines for watch apps to ensure a seamless user experience.
After multiple iterations, I developed GasStop – "Find cheap gas with one tap."
Key Features of GasStop
List View: Displays all nearby gas stations with filters for distance and price.
Map View: Highlights the cheapest gas station by default.
Users can toggle between list and map views easily.
Gas stations with the cheapest gas are highlighted in green.
Users can filter stations based on price and distance to find the best option.
Clicking on a gas station card reveals:
Prices for different fuel types.
Price trend charts.
A "Get Directions" button for easy navigation.
Users can report incorrect gas prices by tapping "Report Price."
An input field allows them to submit corrections.
A backend review system can verify reports and update prices accordingly.
Most users will be checking gas prices while driving.
A smartwatch app ensures:
Quick, hands-free access to crucial information.
Minimal distractions, enhancing safety.
Instant navigation without switching to a phone app.
Impact & Reflections
This solution provides a simple yet effective way to find the cheapest gas, helping users save money effortlessly. Designing for a smartwatch was an exciting challenge, pushing me to think beyond traditional mobile interfaces.
